To reduce the still-existing risk of contamination, single-use technology based on the application of disposable components has found validation and has been a rise in popularity on the pharmaceutical and biological industry.

Single-use systems (SUS) refers to pharmaceutical/biological processing equipment designed to be used once and then discarded. SUS is composed of plastic components which have been sealed and sterilized using gamma irradiation in general.

 

Compared with classic stainless steel or glass equipment, the benefits of SUS are:

  • Come sterile – avoid cleaning, sterilization and validation prior to usage
  • Avoid complex steam, water for injection (WFI) and plumbing installed – less facility infrastructure required
  • Essentially plug-and-play, quick process turnaround and set up of new processing

SUS is being used for a range of applications including upstream production, mixing, filtration, purification, fill-finish, storage and others. SUS provides faster change-overs and reduced times for production and process.
