The mortar and pestle is a standard tool as homogenizer in laboratories which already used for thousands of years. Modern solutions are based on blender type instruments, such as bead mills, ultrasonic treatment, rotor-stator mechanical, high pressure, and many other physical forces. Homogenizers function as mixers that reduce and alter particle size to create a uniform and consistent mixture from immiscible liquids. It works by breaking the components and evenly distributing throughout the solution. They are immiscible since they have varying sizes, or are in different phases from each other. The homogenizer works similar to other mixing equipment aside from creating a homogenous mixture such as emulsifying, suspending, grinding, dispersing, and dissolving.

Homogenizers are usually used in food and beverage production, agricultural products manufacture, laboratory testing, chemical processing and pharmaceuticals. Homogenization is a very common sample preparation process for the analysis of nucleic acids, proteins, cells, metabolism, and pathogens. Normal homogenizer works very well in beaker or maybe conical flask in some chemical experiments like fat extraction. However, for some microbiological or biological experiments like handling with cell cultures which involve precipitates, cells and tissues in the 0.5mL or 1.5mL microcentrifuge tubes, those homogenizers are too big or not in the appropriate size to fit in the micro-tube.

Bel-Art ProCulture Cordless Homogenizer Unit is designed as micro-tube homogenizer system. Hand-held, cordless homogenizer features a simple push in / pull out pestle exchange and is ideal for thorough and faster processing of one to many samples. Matched pestle tips and micro tubes can be used either with the homogenizer or with hand processing.

Features:

  • Pestles and tubes assure tight tolerances and thorough homogenization and grinding of materials resulting in optimal efficiency of pellet reconstitution or re-suspension
  • Tubes have 25% thicker bottoms than industry standard to ensure integrity during use
  • Pestles and tubes are chemical and heat resistant; colorant-free to eliminate potential leaching of heavy metals into samples
  • Each tube has frosted side and cap surfaces for labeling, a positive seal “snap-cap” design and a pierceable top for optimal functionality
  • Pestles have a unique ribbed shaft that provides precise finger control of homogenization for shear sensitive samples; also fit most motorized mixer adapters
  • Manufactured and packaged in a class 10,000 cleanroom; pestles and tubes are certified DNase, RNase and Pyrogen-free, and made of animal and phthalate/phthalate-ester free polypropylene with lot control and material traceability
  • Available in individually wrapped tubes and pestles over packed in resealable bags of 100 each or bulk packed in resealable bag with an additional heat-seal above the standard closure that indicates if the package has been opened
