Some electronics and chemical samples or reactants may react to moisture and causing damages on them. A desiccator is used to prevent moisture from damaging these moisture sensitive samples.

A desiccator is an airtight container. It is designed to absorb water vapor from the water-absorbing hygroscopic reactants. It uses a suitable drying agent which usually placed at the bottom part of the desiccator to maintain an atmosphere of low humidity. The most common and traditional desiccators are circular and made of heavy glass. They include a removable platform where the items place on it. Color changing silica gel or sometimes calcium chloride are used as the drying agent, which also called ‘desiccant’.

The traditional heavy-glass desiccator provides a uniform, thick-walled construction which maintains a tight seal while the overall shape allows easy content retrieval. However, the weight of this type of desiccator leads to some problems on the safety and also handling. The Bel-Art ‘Space-Saver’ Desiccators are a safe and affordable alternative to glass desiccators.

Bel-Art offer two different types of ‘Space Saver’ polycarbonate/ polypropylene desiccators as the alternative to glass desiccators. The normal Bel-Art ‘Space Saver’ Polycarbonate/ Polypropylene Desiccator can maximize the space in laboratory or classroom. This strong, shatterproof desiccator can provide dry storage and protection for moisture-sensitive products. The Bel-Art ‘Space Saver’ Polycarbonate/ Polypropylene Vacuum Desiccator degas liquids quickly and easily in the laboratory or classroom besides providing dry storage and protection for moisture sensitive products.

Both the Bel-Art ‘Space Saver’ Polycarbonate/ Polypropylene Desiccator and Bel-Art ‘Space Saver’ Polycarbonate/ Polypropylene Vacuum Desiccator got the following basic features:

    • ‘Flat Dome,’ clear polycarbonate top with knob maximizes interior clearances and provides an average of 13% greater interior volume over standard hemispherical domes
    • Include a 0.32 cm (⅛") thick perforated plate; disposable or reusable desiccant can be placed on or under this plate
    • A neoprene O-ring assures a tight seal down to 0˚C without the need for grease (ring will not be harmed if grease is used.)
    • Lighter and less costly than similarly sized glass models; does not chip like glass
    • Ease of handling
    • White polypropylene bottom can support incandescent crucibles on High Heat Minerit HD Ceramic Desiccator Plates (series F42038)
    • Large ribbed knob for easy lifting of top
    • Extra heavy walls(Bel-Art ‘Space Saver’ Polycarbonate/ Polypropylene Desiccator only)

Special Features for the Vacuum Desiccator:

          • Holds a full vacuum (29.9" Hg) at room temperature for 24 hours
          • Tapered polypropylene stopcock with PTFE plug (F42040-0000) accepts tubing with ¼ to ⅜” I.D. and allows a controlled entrance of air preventing unnecessary turbulence
          • Clear polycarbonate bottom models offer increased viewing visibility from more angles
